The latest unit in our science program has been “The Solar System and beyond.” We learned all about the eight (ask your Bobcat what happened to Pluto!) planets that orbit our Sun. In this unit we took an in-depth look at the way the planets work. We studied the dense inner planets then contrasted them to the gas and ice giants of the outer planets. We even entered “space school,” which quickly became a class favorite. Each student designed a possible space station at Jupiter and we even voted for a class version we will be building later in the month! Now that we have finished understanding the solar system, we will take a look at other astronomical bodies such as galaxies, black holes, and a whole slew of interesting stars. We should be finishing our Astronomy unit right before spring break! Our next unit is focused on the inter-tidal zone as we ramp up to our outdoor education trip in April. Keep up the great science fifth and sixth graders!
